A mechanical parking brake asks your hand to pull a lever that moves a cable. An electronic parking brake asks your finger to move a switch, then lets a controller, actuator, sensors, and brake hardware finish the job.
The button is simpler. The system is not.
Electronic parking brakes can add useful functions such as automatic application, dynamic emergency braking, hill-start assistance, and tighter integration with vehicle control systems. The trade is that a simple mechanical path becomes an electronically managed one.

A small switch frees cabin space and removes the need for a large mechanical lever in the center console.
